Popular WASH WaterCredit Models

Water.org has found the involvement of WASH NGOs to be effective in implementing WaterCredit activities.

WASH NGOs:

  • Provide WASH expertise to MFIs that lack in-house expertise.
  • Facilitate WaterCredit programs through revolving loan funds in which initial seed capital for the loan funds are provided through local savings schemes or donor subsidies.
  • Link community members to financial services for water and sanitation improvements (including MFIs and commercial banks).
  • Create product demand, organize community members, and facilitate government engagement.

Unlike MFIs, WASH NGOs are not positioned to borrow commercial capital directly to finance the construction of water and sanitation projects, constraining ability their ability to scale. Thus Water.org sees a strong role for collaboration between NGOs and MFIs.
