To date, WaterCredit loans have been made for:

  • Household water connections
  • Household sewerage connections
  • Toilets and pit latrines
  • Water assets, including rainwater harvesting tanks and sinks
  • Tubewells
  • Combination loans, such as:
    • Water + sewerage connections
    • Sewerage connection + toilet

Water connection loans typically involve laying of pipeline to connect a home to the main water supply or closest trunk line, along with provision of a water meter and a deposit to the local water authority (if required).  Sewerage connection and toilet loans typically involve a leach pit or septic tank, along with the labor and materials for construction.  Water.org and its local WSH partners maintain a directory of qualified WASH service providers to ensure appropriate, quality construction, maintenance and repair of facilities.

Water.org is open to the needs and demands of our MFI partners to develop new products focused on the WASH needs of their clients.  For example, we believe that there is potential to develop WaterCredit loans for low-cost, high-efficiency irrigation equipment in agricultural areas, and for solutions to improve water quality.  There is also potential for WASH savings-related products.  We are pleased to collaborate with our partners in order to successfully do this, thereby further expanding the impact of WaterCredit and number of people with access to water and sanitation.
